So, North Americans, here's hoping you all survived the Polar Vortex. We had a light dusting of snow the other day, and I felt embarrassed to be bitching about it. There's a reason I live on a fault line: that temperate rainforest climate, where it rarely gets too cold or too hot.
And the weather in much of Europe is apparently pretty bad, and weather conditions in Australia are apparently HORRENDOUS. So that sucks for large portions of the world. If you live anywhere that's been affected by extreme weather, of the hot or the cold variety, please feel free to drop me a comment announcing that you're still alive. But don't feel obligated to do so.
In other news, I am finally getting really serious about cutting out sugar and cutting way down on carbohydrates. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes nearly a year ago, and I've been rather a dilettante about it so far. But I finally experienced some diabetic symptoms, numbness in the three last fingers on my left hand that started a few weeks back and hasn't gone away. Numbness in fingers is an early sign of diabetic neuropathy. I can still type, despite the numbness, but it can get so much worse from here on. And Type 2 can in most cases be controlled (or at least mostly controlled) through a strict dietary regime.
I have three diabetic-friendly cookbooks now, one of which is entirely about sugar-free, low-carb desserts. Hey, I like dessert. I probably ended up with diabetes precisely BECAUSE I like dessert so much. And potatoes. I've always been fond of potatoes.

Date: 2019-02-06 07:06 pm (UTC)My brother just moved to Manitoba, a few days ahead of the Polar Vortex. It took the movers a few hours to move all his stuff into his new apartment, with the door open the whole time. By the time they were done it was the same temperature inside as out. He wrote to me on WhatsApp that he was huddled on the bed under every blanket he owned, and he was still colder than he’d been in his life.
