Oh for fuck's sake! Last week my Twitter account was hacked, this week it was the turn of my Gmail account. If anybody got a spam message from me, I apologize. 'Twas not really me.

I have a horrible head cold. There is no dignity in having a cold, it's not an elegant illness. Is there such a thing as an elegant illness? Probably not. But a cold is particularly inelegant.

Ben Aaronovitch's Broken Homes arrived today from across the ocean, so I can curl up on the couch with a cup of Neo-Citran and read it. Anybody local want dibs on borrowing it once I've finished it?It's not coming out in Canada until next February, hence me having to buy in hard copy and buy from the UK.

I made the mistake of telling my mum I think no footballer is worth 100 million euros, not even Gareth Bale, and she is very offended on his behalf. She has a fierce crush on him. It's actually kind of hilarious. And my brother is back from his mini-break in San Francisco in which he watched Everton play Juventus at a friendly. He was ecstatic because Everton won.

Off to take a nap and then crack open Broken Homes.

Were my old Latin teacher alive, he too would have been overjoyed to hear of Everton beating Juventus, even in a pre-season friendly

He gave an entire exposition on something which happened at a chariot race in (I think) 5th century Constantinople with direct reference to a) tribalism; b) sports allegiances as an expression of tribalism; c) particularly among the economically disadvantaged and dispossessed; d)highlighted by consideration of the then-contemporary ban on British teams playing in Europe in consequence of football hooliganism; e)"Something has to be done" handwringing by relevant civic authorities, then and now; and f) distinct triumphalism that the Blues were on top.
