I had a lovely Christmas. I hope the rest of you who celebrate can say the same.
My laptop is working again. It went kaput on Thursday, and I took it in Friday. It was fixed by Monday (Christmas Eve), for $135 plus tax, which is decent. It's $151.20 I wish I hadn't had to spend, but hey, it's a 4 year old laptop. That's not young, by computer standards. And it's never had a thing go wrong with it before.
I saw "Mary Queen of Scots" and was rather underwhelmed. It started out very promisingly, but then kind of gradually petered out. Excellent performances by Saoirse Ronan as Queen Mary and Margot Robbie as her cousin Queen Elizabeth I, but all the same, it took a lot of liberties with history, and didn't even have the grace to be so fabulous I simply didn't care.
Good work in the supporting roles by Guy Pearce (unrecognizable as Sir William Cecil), David Tennant (unrecognizable as John Knox), and Jack Lowden who played Collins in "Dunkirk", playing Mary's second husband Lord Darnley. Collins was the blond fighter pilot whom Peter and his dad rescue from the sinking Spitfire which ditches near their pleasure yacht as they sail towards Dunkirk. But I digress.
Also, nice supporting work from Adrian Lester as Lord Randolph, the beleaguered English ambassador to Scotland, and Gemma Chan as Bess of Hardwick, Elizabeth's chief lady in waiting. That said, it would be nice if colourblind casting extended to main roles. Lester (who is Black British) and Chan (a Brit who is ethnically Chinese) were good, but all the really juicy roles went to white actors. Oh well, baby steps are better than no steps at all.
But all the same, despite the actors all working their tails off, "Mary Queen of Scots" added up to less than the sum of its parts.
