It rained in the night and now everything feels and smells clean, but it's not actually raining anymore. I love it. Last time I stripped the bed I unwisely put a dark green fitted sheet on it. There's a REASON I very rarely use that particular fitted sheet. I have a white and grey cat who loves to sleep on the bed, and especially in this warm weather she's shedding like crazy. Need to change the sheets.

Con or Bust has now officially been incorporated as a non-profit organization, and it is announcing its 2016 auction. Con or Bust helps fans of colour attend SFF conventions. They don't have any auction items up just yet, but watch [personal profile] kate_nepveu's space for more info.

[personal profile] kate_nepveu has done a reread/book review of Temeraire/His Majesty's Dragon (it's called His Majesty's Dragon in North America and Temeraire elsewhere in the world, part of an insidious plot by the publishers to confuse readers) and it's fabulous!!!! Kate divides the book into sections of a few chapters each, and analyzes each section, as well as having more general thoughts about the whole book. It's really interesting, and I'm off to re-read the first book now. Warning: there are a few minor spoilers for later books in the series in Kate's post, and a lot more spoilers in the comments. So if you're not caught up on the Temeraire-verse, maybe bookmark the post to read later.

League of Dragons, the FINAL book in Naomi Novik's Temeraire series, comes out June 14. Bounce, bounce. In other news, i have successfully converted my offline best friend to the joys of Temeraire. She's read the first 3 books, has lent the first one to her dad, and is seeking out the fourth book from the library.

Music is very evocative. The other day [personal profile] shezan posted a YouTube video of a scene from an (apparently excellent) recent production of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte. Now, Cosi Fan Tutte was the first opera I ever saw, when I was about 8. My mother had a friend who was in the chorus of the Edmonton Opera (we lived in Edmonton when I was little, moved to more civilized climes when I was 10. Lovely people in Edmonton, but ghastly weather). Her friend got us 2 tickets for the dress rehearsal of Cosi Fan Tutte quite cheaply, and I went with my dad. I thought in fact that I’d gone with my mum, but she was very definite that she has never seen Cosi Fan Tutte performed live, so it must’ve been my dad, as this was before their divorce. I don’t remember the companion clearly, but I remember the opera very vividly!

It was entrancing, especially the part where the conductor downed his baton, started yelling at the lead tenor, and they argued for 10 minutes (not in English) while the other 3 singers on the stage just sat down on the scenery and stared idly into space. I have vivid memories of a few other opera dress rehearsals we went to before we moved to Vancouver, particularly The Magic Flute (Mozart again), but none quite as vivid as Cosi Fan Tutte. I guess because it was the FIRST opera I’d seen, my entry into a new world.

And then last night I had my music on shuffle, and The Cribs’ song “Stick to your Guns” came up. Now, the only reason I downloaded that song is because it plays almost in its entirety in the pilot episode of “Misfits”, during the scene after Nathan’s mother chucks him out, when he’s walking down the road with 2 duffel bags, calling friend after friend on his cell phone, looking for a place to crash and not finding one. Eventually he breaks into the community centre where he’s doing his community service and sleeps there. Hearing that song, I was transported back to first watching the pilot, and suddenly wanted to dig out my “Misfits” DVDs and start a rewatch. It was a flawed show, but it had some terrific moments.
