Had the NICEST interaction with two dogs and a man yesterday. One rather sedate adult female German Shepherd, and one friendly but rather rambunctious 6 month old German Shepherd cross (breed of cross unknown, but something smaller and fluffier, by the looks of things). Mother and daughter, adopted from the SPCA together. Mother had been dumped by the side of a road heavily pregnant. A valuable purebred animal, but clearly the owners had forgotten to get her spayed and didn't want the trouble of a pregnant dog.

The new owners went into the SPCA expecting to get a puppy, and the husband fixated on one of the puppies up for adoption while the wife fixated on the mama dog. Rather than attempt to choose, they got both. Some people in this world SUCK. Fortunately not everybody in this world sucks. The husband said their old German Shepherd had died last year at the age 16 after a long illness, and they were both in dire need of a PROJECT. Taking a rambunctious puppy to obedience classes while simultaneously doing remedial obedience training on her imperfectly-trained mother was just what the doctor ordered.

Immediate Boss's daughter's dog found her a few years ago, rather than the other way around. She lives in a rural area, and saw a car dump a dog by the side of the road. Too far away, alas, to get a license plate number on the assholes. She picked up the dog, being a confirmed cat person but also not wanting the dog to get hit by a car while attempting to run after his owners. She had intended to take it straight to the SPCA, but it was the Friday evening right before Canadian Thanksgiving, and they were closed until the following Tuesday for the holidays. Immediate Boss and her husband were visiting at the time, and their daughter told them sternly, "He can stay over the holidays, because there's nowhere else for him to go, but I don't need or want a dog. Tuesday morning he GOES."

Dog was as good as gold, didn't chase IB's daughter's two cats, didn't make any messes on the carpet, just whined by the door when he had to go out, was obviously aware this was an audition. And by Tuesday IB's daughter was all, "Well, I can't be late for work right after the Thanksgiving weekend. That would look bad. I'll take him to the SPCA after work today or tomorrow." And so on and so forth, excuse after excuse until she finally admitted that she was now a dog owner and took him to the damn vet.

i haven't seen or heard from Lawyer recently. He and his husband have a rescued German Shepherd/Rottweiler cross with aggression issues towards other dogs (he got kicked out of doggie daycare and at our last meeting was getting daily private walks with a dog walker for exercise during the day, because Lawyer and his husband both work long hours and live in a condo). Lawyer used to come into the office about 3 or 4 times a year to visit Ultimate Boss and would build time into his schedule to show me pictures of the dog on his iPad and tell me how the rehabilitation project was going. I guess the project he was working on with our organization is now complete. They must have spent SO MUCH money on that dog, between the daycare, the private walks, the remedial private obedience training, etc. But they don't have kids, and even if they did, Lawyer wore VERY expensive suits on his visits to our office, so I daresay they could still afford it.

Some people have a terrible attitude towards animals. Fortunately there are other, MUCh nicer people who treat animals well, which gives me hope. But there always seem to be more of the assholes than the nice ones.

No, I think the assholes are just so *obvious*.

Sneakers (see picture) was also a "self-rescue": came to our door, 10 weeks old, had clearly been dumped in the fields next to our house. I was all, "no no, we can't have a cat, I'm allergic, too much trouble." It turns out he's hypoallergenic (no idea why), and by the time two weeks had passed, well ... That was in 2001.

Self-rescues are the *best* pets.

That's how we got the late great Sailor. He turned up, Middle Sister insisted we fed him, he never left, and proceeded to batter down every boundary my mother laid to the point where one day she phoned me, then hung up on me because "the cat hasn't had his chicken"...

Maude is rather reaping the benefits, now.

She doesn't like cats! And didn't want a dog, either, usually announced while buttering the dog's toast for him.
