So Alan Rickman is dead. Only 69, same age as David Bowie. I must be getting old. When I was a teenager, I would’ve said that 69 was ANCIENT. But now I’m 39 myself, and 69 is only 30 years away. I always thought the story of Alan Rickman and his wife was kind of sweet. They met at some political event when he was 19 and she was 18, they were together ever since, but didn’t actually get married until 2012. In retrospect, maybe they got married because he was ill. He was great playing against type as Colonel Brandon in Sense & Sensibility. Mind you, he was so good in the showy villain roles that I kept expecting him to break out into maniacal laughter, even though I’d read the book and I knew Colonel Brandon wasn’t one of the bad guys.
I am nearly finished Carrie Fisher’s hilarious memoir Wishful Drinking and I’ve only had one “flinch” moment. When she’s writing about her alcoholism, she lists a bunch of famous people who were also alcoholics, and drops into the list “Ireland” and “Russia”, along with the famous people. She’s a lot funnier when she’s making fun of herself than when she’s making fun of entire countries full of people. I’m not even Irish or Russian myself, and I was still kind of, “Was that strictly necessary?” It just felt like a cheap laugh. To be fair, she spends MUCH more time making fun of herself than making fun of others. And she’s hysterically funny when she’s making fun of herself. The book is well worth reading despite the “flinch” moment.
