Cutting for a disastrous attempted biopsy on a very unhappy cat who was determined to spread the misery around, Mad Max: Fury Road, and the FIFA corruption indictments:

Well, frell. Young Miss Weaver’s biopsy was supposed to be today. She wasn’t what you’d call happy when I dropped her off at 8:30 am, but it was the subdued kind of unhappy. Huddled in the back of the carrier, with a plaintive little meow from time to time. Around 1:40 pm the vet called me and said he had not been able to go ahead with the biopsy. As the morning passed, she got more and more agitated and distressed, even with a sedative added to her IV fluids.

The vet said she was so agitated and unmanageable (his words) by the time it came to prep her for surgery that he would’ve had to use more anaesthetic than he was comfortable with given her size. I guess the margins are fairly fine when you’re dealing with a 10 pound animal. He suggested we reschedule for another day, and make sure she’s the first surgery of the day. He thought being stuck in a cage for several hours with an IV in her paw, when she could smell other people and animals in the room, was probably not helpful to her state of mind.

Life lesson: do not adopt a feral kitten who’s still mostly feral when you come to adopt her at 7 months! Not trying to put people off adopting kittens from a feral background, most of whom adjust just fine to domesticated life, but speculating that YMW may have been a tougher nut to crack than most. She’s absolutely fine with me, has gotten used to me, and has let my mother (my most frequent and regular visitor) pet her occasionally, but with everybody else on the planet, she’s still not what you’d call tame.

She’s been put under anaesthetic twice before, when she had her teeth cleaned last summer and when she had the abdominal ultrasound last month, but maybe she was in a better mood those days, or maybe she happened to be first surgery of the day those times. But it means we have to do everything all over again. And my vet is leaving the practice end of June. Apparently his wife got a job offer in Toronto so they’re off. Frelling Toronto, taking my vet away from me. YMW didn’t actually *like* him (see above re: everybody on the planet), but he was very patient and gentle with her always, even when she scratched him during exams. There are other vets at the practice, and I’m sure they’re nice too, but I really want a frelling diagnosis and a treatment plan in place before the end of June. I don’t want to switch vets when we still don’t know what’s causing her symptoms.

In happier news, I’m going to see Mad Max: Fury Road on Monday and am really hoping it lives up to the reviews. The reviews are making it sound awesome. Also, Charlize Theron. I would pay cash money to watch Charlize Theron read the phone book. I still haven’t seen Avengers: Age of Ultron, just haven’t been able to summon the energy to organize something (or to go see it by myself, if attempts to organize going with a friend failed). You shouldn’t have to force yourself to go to a movie theatre. Going to the movies is supposed to be fun.

Speaking of fun, all this FIFA corruption stuff is just….delightful. Go Loretta Lynch! It would be nice if she’d hit crooked bankers harder as well, but indicting a bunch of crooks who are taking grassroots development money away from poor kids in developing countries is good too. Being Canadian, I am naturally convinced that everything the US does is bad until proven otherwise, but if they keep this up, I may need to reconsider. Now, to find out if one of the VIPs who’s been indicted will squeal and implicate FIFA President Sepp Blatter. Patience, patience.

Also, reading about the scandal and the indictments, I am struck by just how many stupid mistakes the indictees made while attempting to launder their bribe money and evade taxes on their ill-gotten gains. It’s like none of them have ever watched a movie or TV show featuring organized crime. Blatter may be less prone to making stupid mistakes and may get away with it all, of course. You don’t get to the top of Corruption Mountain without being cleverer than the people below you, or if you do, you don’t stay at the top of the mountain for 17 years.

I'm so sorry to hear about YMW's difficulties. Very frustrating for you and for her. Poor kitty!

She is probably smug about having escaped that place!

Ha ha ha, had I but known... Eight years ago we rescued a mother cat and her kittens, who were nearly weaned and had clearly never seen a human in their lives. One became perfectly tame within a day or two and went off to a wonderful home, the other three took MONTHS to socialize, and were never able to adjust to other homes.

One of them died a couple years ago, but the other two are still with us -- lovable and snuggly with us, but terrified of every other human on the planet.
