So, the good news is my mum sold her condo. The bad news is the retirement housing she will be going into is no pets. Jasper has been staying with my sister and her family since just before Mum put the condo on the market, but it's not working out. He's been peeing on the carpet, despite having an iron bladder under normal circumstances. He's used to living with a retired person, not living with 2 busy adults, a very active 3 1/2 year old and a 6 month old. Older Niece stopped tormenting him long ago (as a young toddler she was unmerciful, but she got put through Dog Boot Camp and it stuck), and Younger Niece is too young to torment him, but they're both noisy and active, and he doesn't get much peace and quiet.
He is a well-trained, healthy Shih Tzu about 8 or 9 years old (he was abandoned just outside the SPCA as an adult, so the age is an estimate by the vet), with a timid, submissive personality. He gets along well with other dogs (he always, always lets them be the boss), is also submissive to and respectful of cats, and can handle children in small doses, but would not be suitable for a home with small children living there full-time. He could handle visits by grandchildren or nieces and nephews, though, and would be gentle with them. He's never once bitten Older Niece, even when she was going through her young toddler Scourge of the Canines phase and really would've deserved it.
He likes hanging out with his human or humans, and has a rather neurotic tendency to follow them around and sit outside the bathroom door when his human is attempting to urinate in private. Speaking of urination, he is normally extremely well-housebroken, and he has stayed in hotels with his human with absolutely zero incidents. Prior to going to live with my sister, the last time he had an accident was 7 years ago, during the rocky first few days in his new home with my mum. The first few years she had him, she worked full-time as a teacher, and he would routinely hold it from 7:30 am when she would leave for work until 4 pm or so when she'd get back. So, while a retired person or couple would be ideal, he might also suit a working adult or working couple. He's happier when he gets to spend lots of time with a human, though.
I've forgotten the brand of food he eats, but it's one of the ones you have to buy at the vet's office. He's not a particularly playful dog, quite likes chewing on squeaky toys but has never really grasped the concept of Playing Fetch. He doesn't require (or particularly want) much exercise. He's just a rather plump little lap dog who adores being petted and would like a quiet life.
Mum would prefer to place him in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver, but would be prepared to look further afield for a good home. She has a car, after all. I can't take him because my apartment building has a 2 pet maximum, and I already have my own cat and as of recently, my mum's cat. If you know of anybody who might be interested, please feel free to leave a comment or send me a private message. And please feel free to reblog a link to my entry, if you are so inspired.
