Dec. 24th, 2014 03:22 pmMerry Christmas Eve to those who celebrate, and to those who don't, Happy Wednesday.
I'm pretty sure I posted a link to this last year, and probably the year before that as well, but have a read of Verily, the Sky is Riven with Angels Singing, a retelling of the Nativity story from Joseph's POV, by
papersky, a.k.a. fantasy novelist Jo Walton.
And at some point tomorrow I have to borrow my sister's DVD of The Ref, a.k.a. my favourite Christmas movie ever. It's about an incredibly dysfunctional, bitterly unhappy married couple in Connecticut (Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis) who get kidnapped by a jewel thief on the run (Denis Leary) on Christmas Eve on their way home from (totally ineffectual) marriage counselling. It's dark humour, but boy is it ever funny. Spacey and Davis are both brilliant, all caustic wit, but with an underlying pathos that reminds you these are very unhappy people, but not bad people. And Amazon's selling it for five bucks Canadian.
I'm off to try and wrap chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons (very, very carefully). See, I got my mum tickets to Theodora for Christmas, which means she doesn't really get a Christmas present on the day. So on my way home from work today, I stopped at the Italian bakery near me which makes macaroons she adores. I figure if she eats them tomorrow they'll still be pretty fresh. And Brother is getting a paperback of Ben Aaronovich's Midnight Riot (a.k.a. Rivers of London in non-North American markets) in addition to the items he asked for, because I think he might like it. But with a gift receipt, in case he turns up his nose at it.
