twistedchick, how a 17 weeks pregnant dentist died after being denied a medically necessary abortion. Ai yai yai. And this kind of thing is why I'm like a broken record on abortion, because sometimes things go drastically wrong with a pregnancy and we need to trust women to make their own damn medical decisions. Here's hoping Dr. Halappanaver's widower has a good lawyer.
And gakked fromdelux_vixens, the Virginia State Board of Education is instituting different pass marks based on race. Asian students would have to do best to pass, followed by whites, followed by Latinos, followed by blacks, followed by students of any race with disabilities. If I were a parent living in Virginia, of any race, I'd be seriously ticked off right now, either for my kid being assumed to be incapable of high achievement, or for my kid having to put in a lot more effort than kids of other races just in order to pass.
I suppose it's just faintly possible the state board of education *meant* well, but they've managed to piss off just about everybody. Also, is it me, or does this oh-so-cunning plan totally ignore the very existence of mixed-race students? "You're half-black and half-Korean? Wait, let me get out my calculator and figure out if you passed the test or not."
