raincitygirlFound a fabulous new Thai restaurant, Papaya Hut, on Burrard street at West Broadway. Best Thai food I've ever had, and not very expensive. If you're in the general vicinity, I strongly recommend trying it out. No reservations necessary.
Also found out that Klaus Fuchs was NOT Jewish, in fact, he was a Lutheran. The great majority of the scientists who lost their jobs and fled Nazi Germany in the 30's were Jewish, at least ethnically. And Richard Rhodes doesn't say anything about it either way in his book Dark Sun: the Making of the Hydrogen Bomb, at least not that I can remember. But no, apparently Fuchs was kicked out of Nazi Germany for having overly left-wing views, not for his religion/ethnicity, ended up in Britain (which is probably where he was first recruited as a Soviet spy), then ended up at Los Alamos for several years working on bombs, then back to Britain, which is where he finally got caught.
I had a funny conversation with my mother about that.
Her: Well, if Fuchs was a Soviet spy, why would Britain and America let him in?
Me: Huh?
Her: I mean, I know the Soviet Union was part of the Allies, but it still seems risky.
Me: He was a SPY. That means the Brits and Americans didn't KNOW he was secretly a passionate Communist who was passing on atomic secrets.
Her: Oh, I get it now.
Me: I thought the word "spy" was kind of self-explanatory. They don't go around wearing t-shirts saying, "I work for the KGB on the side. Ask me how!"
Her: Those would be great t-shirts, though.
Off to buy groceries, then catch up with my f-list/dwircle, which I have been neglecting.
