So, um, apparently I have the shortest grieving period in the world. I went "window shopping" for a kitten to keep Savannah company (purely on a theoretical basis), fell in love with a little guy at the SPCA, and much to my surprise, they were willing to let me take him home then and there.

He's 4 months and 1 week, all black, scrawny little fella, and very timid in the isolation room where he and his sister were being kept. THey'd been kept separated from the other kittens because they'd had an upper respiratory infection for a few weeks. Even though they seem fine now, there were elaborate protocols to go into the isolation room and after that you had to leave the general cat and kitten area, and not come back. I guess a lot of people were put off by those protocols, because everybody was cooing over the cages with the healthy younger kittens in them, and ignoring the 2 older black kittens in the isolation room. But you know me, sucker for a hard luck case.

Brother and sister were called Doc and Alaura, and Alaura was a FLIRT. So playful and friendly, I'm sure she'll be snapped up the moment they let her out of that locked room. Several of the kittens in the cages in the general area had 3 or 4 competing applications in already, but nobody had applied for Doc or Alaura. I chose Doc basically because he's big for his age, so not as kittens-looking as Alaura, and because he was shy and timid. It's more fun to bring them out of their shells than for them not to have a shell to begin with. Read more... )

Now, NAMES! My first instinct was T'Challa, because he's a black cat with superpowers (his superpower being escapology). C. suggested Houdini, also owing to his escape artist tendencies. I'm torn. My concern with T'Challa is that I have a feeling a lot of male black cats and dogs adopted in 2018 are going to be named T'Challa, after the Black Panther movie, so will this end up being the "it" name of 2018, followed by seeming terribly dated a few years down the road. Like the final school year before my mother retired, the year she had 4 Emmas and 3 Noahs in a single class full of 6 year olds.

So, what do you guys think? Houdini or T'Challa? Oh, and to help you make up your mind, some visuals:
