Oct. 15th, 2015 06:01 pmPeople can be kind. I forget that sometimes, get all caught up in the horrible shit that happens all around the world (and right here in Vancouver), and forget that total strangers can be kind sometimes.
I was at Safeway after work, and while at the cash register, managed to flip my wallet upside down while the change pocket was unzipped. Result: a cascade of coins all over the floor. Two separate people crouched down and helped me pick up all my loonies and quarters and other assorted change.
And then I was walking home from Safeway, and there were two uniformed police officers on the sidewalk giving shiny stickers to two ecstatic looking little First Nations boys. Now, the skeptic in me points out that this was probably not the idea of the cops in question, it was probably a PR move dreamt up at City Hall. "When interacting with children, give them presents and they will trust you. Bonus points if the children are from marginalized populations that have a mutually suspicious relationship with the police." And their father, who was with them, didn't look quite so thrilled. All the same, getting the stickers was obviously the highlight of these kids' afternoon.
