Great post by [personal profile] rachelmanija about the Agatha Christie oeuvre. Good stuff in the comments as well. And it's a spoiler-free zone.

Agent Carter continues to delight. Anybody know how the ratings are? I know we've only got 8 episodes, but I wouldn't say no to a Season 2. Unless the writers lost the plot completely in Season 2 the way Sleepy Hollow's writers did. If that were to happen, I'd be content with 8 eps of Agent Carter.

Gakked from [personal profile] giandujakiss, have an article about how women are penalized in the workplace for being assertive while men are rewarded for the same behaviour. Not anything we didn't know already but now it's backed up with facts and shit.

I will never understand Americans. An Idaho woman was shot and killed by her two year old in the middle of Wal-Mart when he found the loaded gun in her purse and started to play with it. That poor woman, and that poor baby who's going to grow up someday and find out what he did. I get that the States has a gun culture that as an outsider I don't understand, and I get that there are plenty of responsible gun owners out there, but who needs to bring a loaded weapon on a grocery trip? I do not feel safer knowing that other people in the canned goods aisle might be packing. In fact, having read that article earlier today, I found myself staring suspiciously at a woman in Safeway with a bulging purse, wondering if I was going to get accidentally shot while buying deodorant after work.

On a more cheerful note, I wanna go on a National Geographic expedition. They look awesome! I realize they're just glorified package tours with an adventure theme, but still, I wanna go kayaking in Belize or something. But Rain, someone sensible pipes up, you don't know how to kayak. How hard can it be to learn, I reply insouciantly. My godparents'* son and his wife went on one of these tours a couple of years ago. One of the more sedate ones, no kayaking involved. Apparently they had a wonderful time.

* I call them my godparents but actually they declined that honour when I was a baby, as it didn't fit into their atheist principles, and anyway, they're Jewish. My godmother once explained that it was very simple. The God most atheists don't believe in is the Christian God, and the G-d they don't believe in is the Jewish G-d. But my real godparents moved to Australia or South Africa or somewhere when I was four and we lost touch with them, so I claim my "godparents" as godparents instead.

And now I have to crash, because I have had way too little sleep the last few nights. Maybe I'll go to bed early and SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT. Chance would be a fine thing!
