rap541 alerted me to this story. So, a couple of days ago, a young man named Michael Sam came out. It's a big deal because he is a college football player who's about to get drafted by the NFL. Or at least, he was considered a likely second or third round draft pick up until a few days ago. We'll see what happens now. If I were an elite athlete about to get my shot at a life of fame and fortune in an intensely macho sport, I'd be so far in the closet I'd end up in Narnia. Heck, I'm STILL closeted with some people in my life, and I don't have much of anything to lose save their good opinion. Sam has a great deal to lose, and he still came out. He's definitely got guts.

Now, I know approximately as much about American football as I know about life on the planet Venus (does watching one season of Friday Night Lights and not paying much attention to the football parts help or hinder my knowledge base?). But

rap541 follows the sport, says Sam is very talented, and also fears his decision may have hurt his career prospects. Let's hope she's wrong.
