So, I managed to metaphorically chow down and read the rest of the Temeraire books. I would probably recommend to someone just starting the series that they stick with the first three books (Temeraire, Throne of Jade, Black Powder War) and leave the rest. The quality definitely goes downhill, although they can't have been that bad, since I did continue reading. As someone on LJ/DW wrote, after a while it's just the same story over again, but set in different countries. Fun new dragon characters, though.

I particularly enjoy Iskierka the vainglorious and flaky fire breather. Yeah, it's a little improbable that she's still IN the Aerial Corps after all the times she's ignored orders, but I suppose needs must. There's a war on, she's the only fire-breather they have, she's an excellent fighter, and she does obey orders as long as she likes them. Plus, what do you do with a huge, martial and grudge-holding creature after you've expelled her? Really the only way they could get rid of her safely would be poison.

I recently called Shaw Cable to inform them that I'm switching my TV and internet to Telus, and ever since I've been bombarded with phone calls trying to get me to change my mind. If they'd been this attentive before I cancelled, I might not have had to do so!

The sister has provided me with her Christmas list, which means I will be going to the Clinique counter at the Bay very shortly to throw myself on the mercy of the saleswoman. The maternal unit is still dithering over whether or not she wants the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban from me (she thinks it's too expensive), but I may just go ahead and buy it. The liquor store in early December is better than the liquor store a few days before Christmas.

Apparently the nurse at the Duchess of Cambridge's hospital who took a hoax call from an Australian radio DJ pretending to be the Queen has committed suicide. She is survived by her partner and two children.

Pauline Marois, the premier of the province of Quebec, used the 23rd anniversary of the Montreal Massacre to announce substantial new funding to combat violence against women, and a provincial gun registry. I got the information from [personal profile] ide_cyan but I was not able to find an English language media source with the announcement. As [personal profile] ide_cyan says, it's good when politicians don't only remember but also take action.
