(no subject)
Nov. 23rd, 2012 06:59 pmAn offline friend just sent me a CD of arias from French operettas by Susan Graham (I mean that Susan Graham sings the arias, not that she wrote the operettas) as a just-because present. I am very touched. In other news, I made it to the grocery store after work today. Buying groceries has been a huge source of anxiety for me lately, so go me. (no, I don't understand WHY I suddenly can't enter a grocery store without drama. It's a mystery)
Note to self: do not mention my feelings on Synod to my Catholic offline friend. Her lot can't even have women priests, let alone bishops.
Another note to self: stop feeling so invested in something occurring in another country. Particularly since I haven't been going to church regularly of late anyway. Although I'm pretty sure I'm still a member in good standing with my parish, because I still do direct deposit once a month. Fortunately the Anglican Church of Canada sorted out that pesky female bishops thing back in 1993, and whaddya know, people got over it. Plus, as
sollersuk would say, if you want to be a true traditionalist, you should go back to what they did in the very very early church, which was have women bishops. So there, so-called traditionalists.
Mind you, British people might be slightly less unhappy over the Synod decision if the Church of England weren't the established church of the land. I mean, the bishops sit in the House of Lords, and VOTE there. Canadian Anglican bishops don't sit in the Senate.
Also (and religion seems to be a theme recently), there was a woman on the bus today loudly evangelizing to her fellow commuters, although I couldn't place her exact theology and didn't want to engage her. Frantic side-eying occurred between me and my fellow members of the captive audience. And a Sikh gentleman started cracking up, which was awful, because then I wanted to laugh too.
It was nerves more than genuine hilarity on both our parts, I suspect. But I'm glad he was nervously entertained rather than nervously appalled. Although maybe he was both entertained and appalled. I said nothing to anybody, just side-eyed eloquently. Fortunately the lady got to her stop eventually. It's nice to know she wasn't riding the bus just to evangelize. Unless she was insulted by the guy cracking up and was beating a strategic retreat from the heathens. It's tough to tell with people who take public transit to preach the Word of God indiscriminately. At least Anglicans don't do that.
