Nov. 5th, 2012 01:54 pmMy Netflix knockoff company has finally sent me The Weight of Water, a rather obscure early film by Kathryn Bigelow, and I have watched it.
ide_cyan recced it in the highest possible terms, and she was right. It’s terrific. I take back everything I ever said about Bigelow being a hack. I still hate The Hurt Locker with the fire of a thousand burning suns, but Bigelow is obviously extremely capable of directing excellent movies, and ones with nuanced female characters.
I don’t understand at all how the freaking Hurt Locker got an Oscar, but the Weight of Water sank without trace. There is no justice in this world. But I maligned Bigelow previously, based on one movie I (really, really, really) disliked. She has oodles of talent. Also, you should watch the movie if you can get a hold of it.
