There’s something small that’s been bugging me ever since I watched The Avengers, and that’s an issue of pronunciation. Very early in the movie, before the Tesseract goes kablooey, Director Fury and Agent Hill are having a conversation in which Hill uses the word “futile.” But she pronounces it in an odd way, “few – tal” with two syllables. I would say it as “few – tie – al” with three syllables, and I had always assumed that was the universal pronunciation.

And a little later Tony Stark says to Agent Coulson that he’s “volatile”, and uses the same odd (to me) pronunciation. He says it as “vol – at – al” with three syllables, whereas I think of it as being pronounced “vol –at – eye – al” with four syllables.

Am I being hopelessly Canadian in my pronunciation, and have I simply failed to realize that Americans say this “tile” sound differently? Or do Robert Downey Jr. and Cobie Smulders happen to share a quirky regional pronunciation? How do they pronounce it in other English-speaking parts of the globe?

I’m finding myself very polyfannish with The Avengers. Usually with a new fandom I pick a pairing and that pairing is my favourite. Here I will read just about any combination of characters as long as it’s well-written. [personal profile] unfitforsociety has some great polyfannish Avengers recs, by the way. It probably helps that Tony and Pepper, the only established couple in canon, just about SCREAM “open relationship”. So there’s a certain amount of flexibility built into the canon.
