It is cold and rainy and November-y. At least the wind's not whipping around like yesterday, though.

Good article about Morena Baccarin (of Firefly fame) and the superb work she's doing on Showtime's new spy drama "Homeland". Well on course for a best supporting actress Emmy, if anybody asks me, and a welcome reminder that a supporting role can still be complex.

The NYPD seem to be in dire need of a PR guru, one who'll tell them "Just following orders" is a lousy slogan. What gets me is that the signs were obviously printed up in volume and distributed. It's not just one guy who never read a history book lugging around a tone-deaf homemade sign. Sigh. It's that damn beach in Cuba all over again.

This review makes Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London sound excellent. Anybody read it and have an opinion? Also, I know Terry Pratchett's new Discworld novel "Snuff" (which features Sam Vimes) had an October release date in the US (north of the border we don't get it until November. Grump, grump, grump). Anybody read it? Is it worth spending the extra $10 for the hardcover, or should i wait until next summer when the paperback's out? Normally a new Vimes book would be an automatic buy in hardcover for me, but I'm currently plodding through Wintersmith (the third in Pratchett's Tiffany Aching YA series) and finding it heavy going.

In other news, glory be, the England men actually managed to win a football match! A meaningless friendly, but still, a win against the current world champions is nothing to sneeze at. This would appear to be the secret of success for England: have everyone's expectations so low that the only hope is not to lose by too embarrassing a goal difference, and then suddenly pull a rabbit out of a hat. Metaphorically speaking.
