I have known for some years now that Orson Scott Card is not living on the same planet as your average sane person, but this takes the cake. Thanks SO much to [personal profile] sparkymonster and [personal profile] jesuswasbatman for linking me to this lovely piece of homophobia with its delicious hubris chaser.

Speaking as someone who had to write one too many essays on Hamlet's tortured self back in the day, I can empathize with the desire to rewrite Hamlet as a less muddled character. But frustrated English students are only supposed to think about doing that, not actually do it and then try to charge people money for it. Sigh. If any modern author is going to insist on rewriting Hamlet, I think I'll take Jasper Fforde's Hamlet from the Tuesday Next books, not Orson Scott Card's version.

Please note that I have not actually read Hamlet's Father, I've only read the exerpts quoted in the review to which I linked. And normally I wouldn't want to criticize something I haven't read, but in this case, I'm totally okay with criticizing, because the exerpts look THAT bad. I'll go out on a limb here and say the rest of the book is probably terrible too. Also, $35 USD sounds like an awful lot of money when I can buy the real text at any used bookshop for $5 CDN.

In other news, I dip a toe in the waters of Tumblr every so often, and have discovered there's now a Yes, Minister Tumblr page. Yay!

Edited to Add:And now [personal profile] scott_lynch has gotten in on the act, by "modernizing" and de-gaying Henry V. So funny!!!!!
