Anybody have any recs for a good biography of Louis Riel? Or a history book with a good overview of the conflict between First Nations and the government. Uncle #1 has discovered by chance that Canadian history is not nearly as warm and fuzzy as he had believed (to be fair to him, he's lived all his life in England), with Indian Wars and the Red River Rebellion and stuff like that. He has asked me to send him a book or books on the subject.

I know about this one! I haven't read it, but it came highly recommended to me.

It is not a great biography or memoir, but Mrs. Mike, by Benedict and Nancy Freedman is the book that introduced me to it, and might give you some ideas how to approach it.
