I have had the kind of day where you stagger home, you lie on the couch for a while, think about ordering take-out for dinner, and then decide, "Fuck it, I already took my bra off. I'm not so desperately hungry that I have the energy to put it back on."

Only one more sleep until the weekend, thank heavens!

So you know that thing I linked to last week regarding a judge in Michigan giving joint custody of the product of his rape to a convicted rapist? Well, there's now a petition for the state of Michigan to initiate proceedings to have Judge Ross removed from the bench. Yay!

A few days ago something truly historic happened. Calico Fiend was perched up on the top of the sofa, grazing away at her dinner. Young Miss Weaver jumped up on the seat of the couch, directly below her, either in hopes of pieces of dry food falling from CF's perch, or in hopes of CF losing interest in her food and wandering off. I was bracing myself for hissing and yowling, like every other time the two of them got within swiping distance. But nothing happened. CF ignored YMW in favour of her dinner, and after a few minutes YMW jumped down off the couch and wandered off. And then the exact same thing happened this morning.

I don't think they're buddy-buddy, exactly, but they definitely seem to be tolerating each other much better than when they were first introduced.

Rapist "father" gets joint custody of the product of his crime

So, note to self. Don't get raped at the age of 12 in Michigan, get pregnant as a result of the rape, and choose to carry to term. A Michigan judge will give your rapist (a twice-convicted child sex offender, convicted for assaulting 2 different children) joint custody over the child of your rape, and that same judge will also provide your convicted rapist with your home address for purposes of arranging joint custody, and issue a court order ordering you and your child to move back to Michigan to facilitate joint custody between and your rapist.

What the fuckity fucking fuck, Judge Gregory Ross? Have you no daughters, no wife, no nieces, no female friends you value? THINK for one fucking second before revictimizing this poor girl and her poor child.

Edited to add: And a commenter pointed out that Judge Ross should know this ruling is fucking wrong even if he's never met a woman socially in his entire life. The women in his life aren't responsible for him using his power as a judge to do this infinitely shitty thing. HE chose to make this judgment.

Calico Fiend takes the stage

It's been...a while. So, last night apparently Coldplay were playing BC Place and Miranda Lambert (who seems to be a country singer of some kind) was playing Rogers Arena. My mum and I, however, were at Baroque Duets of Love and Passion, presented by Early Music Vancouver at Christ Church Cathedral. One of Mum's high school aged tutoring students texted her and she texted back that she was at a concert. This 15 year year old texted back, quite seriously, "Oh, did you manage to get tickets to Coldplay?" In between giggles, I had to explain to Mum who Coldplay even ARE.

Young Miss Weaver and I have had a houseguest for the past 5 weeks (it will be 5 weeks exactly tomorrow) in the shape of Calico Fiend. CF is 18, lived with Sister until Older Niece was born and proved virulently allergic to cat dander. Mum has now rehomed her with me, possibly temporarily, as she is selling her condo, and a cat is not a selling point. It has been a very...interesting 4 weeks and 6 days, but things finally seem to be settling down between YMW and CF. I don't think they'll ever be best buddies, but they can finally share a room now without hissing like teakettles.

I had assumed that YMW would bully CF, what with YMW being much younger and more energetic, and also on her own turf. But from the moment CF emerged from the carrier, she was full of vim and vigour. As Sister put it, CF has spent the past 18 years taking exactly zero crap from anybody, and she's not going to start now! Sister also drove me to distraction by warning me, as I was preparing to scrub HER cat's urine out of the couch with Nature's Miracle Just for Cats enzyme formula (I told you it was....interesting at first), that Calico Fiend was still her cat, and she'd want her back if Older Niece ever grows out of her allergy. I am doing Sister and Mum a favour, after all!

I exercised great restraint in answering. I neither asked Sister to drive into the city and scrub the cat pee out of my couch herself, nor pointed out that as CF is 18, it's far more likely the damn cat will die of old age prior to Older Niece growing out of the allergy. I love Sister and if she ever needs a kidney, she's got one, but she sometimes lacks TACT and awareness of the best time and place to say certain things.

So, how have you guys been?

Water, water everywhere

[personal profile] executrix has posted a link to a page which suggests useful, practical waysworthy causes currently on the ground helping out in Texas following Hurricane Harvey. Things like tampons, disposable diapers and pet food aren't sexy, but they're really damn necessary in an emergency.

As for the floods in South Asia, well over a thousand people are dead, which is a mind boggling number. I'm a monthly donor to Medicins Sans Frontieres (also known in English as Doctors Without Borders), and have just made a one-off donation, because I'm sure they're really pretty stretched right now.

So, um, if you were giving any thought to investing any money with Investors Group, I would suggest running like hell in the opposite direction instead.

I am giving serious thought to forwarding my soon-to-be-ex financial advisor's emails to me to his boss at IG, because he is continuing to be such an asshole. I don't think I'd even have to editorialize in order to point out that what he's writing to me and the way he's putting it is inappropriate in business correspondence. It would just be a question of forwarding the emails, and possibly highlighting the particularly egregious stuff. I feel like emailing him back, "When in a hole, QUIT DIGGING!"

I won't. In fact I still haven't responded to his most recent email from 2 days ago, because I was so angry with him writing to me, among other things, "I fear for your financial future. But maybe you don't care." I knew I couldn't respond civilly and I was raised to be civil. Evidently IG guy was raised differently. The only reason I haven't forwarded the emails yet is because there is a slim possibility his boss might fire him, and I don't like to think of myself as the type of person who would try to get someone fired when they have a wife and two kids to support. But if he keeps up this correspondence, I may turn into that type of person.

Who decides, upon having been (very politely) informed that their services are no longer required, to unload on their soon-to-be-ex-client IN WRITING, so that client has a record of what they've said? It just seems totally unprofessional to me. Aren't financial advisors supposed to thrive upon word of mouth referrals? Wouldn't it seem like a good idea not to burn bridges? I have no idea if this guy is unusual or if this is standard Investors Group practice, but I am feeling more pissed off at the entire organization with each passing day.

Wonder Woman

Just saw Wonder Woman and it was awesome!!!! Not perfect, but still awesome!!!!

I may have more articulate thoughts at a later date when my brain has calmed down, and not to worry, those will get put behind a spoiler cut.

Apparently it's been in cinemas just under a month and is already the highest grossing movie ever directed by a woman. It stole that crown from Fifty Shades of Grey, which was a TERRIBLE movie. So yay for it doing so well!

P.S. Can anyone let me know where I might be able to find WW icons, please?

I've been listening to the Harry Connick, Jr. cover of Smile a lot recently. Written originally by Charlie Chaplin as an instrumental piece, lyrics written by some people less famous than Chaplin called Geoffrey Parsons and John Turner (presumably not the same John Turner who was briefly Prime Minister of Canada back when I was in preschool). And it's a great song, don't get me wrong, but when you think hard about it, the lyrics are a little...fucked-up.

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through
for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just
Smile

But I love the song anyway, so I probably shouldn't put too much thought into it. Otherwise, I'll just end up giving myself a complex. And there are lots of hummable tunes out there with MUCH worse lyrics, after all!

So, what are people up to this fine Saturday evening?

I am simultaneously going through a Sarah McLachlan rediscovery phase, a Kathleen Battle rediscovery phase, and discovering the music of Harry Connick, Jr. for the first time. McLachlan is sort of folky poppy alternative whatever, Battle is an opera singer, and Connick mostly sings swing and blues tunes from a bygone era. I have no idea how I'm managing this strange trifecta. Usually when I go through a discovery or rediscovery stage in music, I stick with just ONE artist at a time and mainline their stuff until I'm sick of it. Apparently not any more.

Oh, and I've been horribly sick with projectile vomiting. Ick. Feeling much better now, but I felt godawful for a while there, wasted a perfectly good weekend. And today I had to wear my jacket both to and from the office because it was a cold and grey day. It's MID-JUNE!!!!

But today on the way home from work (with my jacket on) I met a gorgeous Rhodesian Ridgeback cross who's only 6 months old, enormous, and projected to get even bigger, according to her owner. They don't know for sure what she is crossed WITH, but evidently the mysterious daddy is on the big side for a canine, along with the Rhodesian Ridgeback mommy. Lovely, friendly, charming puppy. Apparently RRs were initially bred to hunt big cats in Africa, so I guess they sort of have no choice but to be enormous if they want to be of any use at all. However, the only danger I was in from this one was of getting licked to death.

Oh, and I found the most beautiful antique sapphire and seed pearl necklace. It's only approximately the price of my apartment. A mere bagatelle! Sometimes I think I should've been born a Rockefeller. I have expensive tastes and no way to indulge them! Are the Rockefellers still rich, or am I dating myself terribly? I haven't heard of any Rockefellers doing anything noteworthy in my lifetime, so I figure either the trust funds are all drained dry by now or they just lay low.

How are you guys? What are you up to? Hopefully not projectile vomiting. We don't want that getting around.

Read this and wonder at the crazy way some people's minds work.

"I need money. Therefore I will buy a put option, stage a fake terrorist attack on a German soccer team, watch their stock price fall as a result, and make money in the stock market."

This idiot seriously couldn't think of any way of making lots of money that didn't involve MURDERING PEOPLE???????!!!!!! As it happens, none of the players actually died when bombs exploded on their team bus, but one was seriously injured, and the rest are probably fucking traumatized. And it was sheer incompetence by the bomber that nobody died, no other reason. Who THINKS like that?

The idiot terrorist-for-profit got caught, and will presumably go to prison. I hope it's for a very, very long time.

I think I may need to revise my tastes in non-fiction. My mum asked me what I've been reading lately, and I said, "Well, I just finished Dead Wake, and just started Shake Hands With the Devil." My mum at first thought they were mystery novels, so I explained they were non-fiction, and then she started laughing at me. She said it's hardly surprising I'm depressed, given the books I read.

Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, by Erik Larson is very good, very thrilling even though I already know the ending (rocks fall, everybody dies).

And Shake Hands With the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda by Lieutenant-General Romeo Dallaire (now Senator Dallaire) is starting out very interestingly even though I suspect it will get horrendously depressing later on.

Any good books out there (in English) about the White Rose? I am contemplating ordering the DVD of Sophie Scholl: The Final Days, but worried that it might depress me. Any suggestions, any better movies or books out there, etc?

Oh damn, my mum was right!

So, which geeky phone case skin do I want?

Either tomorrow after work or Thursday after work, I will be getting a new phone, as the Telus loyalty department have offered me a fantabulous deal, and only just in time. The bloody phone only just started getting wonky, but I'm sure it will affect my trade-in credit.

I have already ordered a new Otterbox Defender case from Amazon.ca, as it was about $20 to $25 cheaper there than at any other Canadian supplier. However, I made a terrible discovery today, thanks to a geeky guy at work. You can get "skins" which are basically decals you put on top of your Otterbox, and they are designed to fit over top of your heavy-duty case. You can get Captain America skins, people! I am not made of money, but I'm not made of stone, either.

Sadly, the coolest designs at Zazzle are all for the Otterbox Symmetry case, not the Otterbox Defender. I am a butterfingers. I need the bloody Defender case, as the Symmetry is much more fragile. It just has really fucking cool art.

But the skins available for the Defender are pretty decent. Please tell me, which of these 2 skins do I want decorating my phone? Bearing in mind that I only have 1 phone, and therefore can only pick 1.

1. the classic heroic Cap pose

OR

2. the shield, distressed

Edited to add: and we have 4 votes in favour of the distressed shield, to 0 against. I'm ordering the shield.

North American folks, please don't forget the clocks go forward TONIGHT!

And I started my period this morning. I'm 40 and have never had the slightest use for my uterus or ovaries, so why do i have periods? And more importantly, how many sleeps until menopause? Don't get me wrong, I hear menopause is horrible, but I know several post-menopausal women who think being post-menopausal is the best thing ever.

I have 2 links to share. First up is Homeopathic A&E by a British comedy duo called Mitchell & Webb. I must investigate Mitchell & Webb further. Um, if you are a big believer in homeopathy, probably DON'T watch the video. I'm not a believer, so I thought it was hilarious rather than offensive.

A really fascinating and well-written article (link stolen from someone on my f-list/dwircle, I don't remember who. If you comment, I'll give you credit) about Farscape in general and Aeryn Sun's feminist journey in particular. And the best part is the interview features a NEW interview with Claudia Black, who played Aeryn. The show ended over a decade ago, so the old interviews with the actors and other creative types have all been picked over long ago. But somehow a reporter convinced Ms. Black to revisit Aeryn.

Apparently Buffy the Vampire Slayer is now 20 years old. Fuck it, I'm suddenly feeling ancient! But then [personal profile] musesfool pointed out that Bucky Barnes turned 100 years old yesterday, and suddenly I feel youthful.

I hate my insomnia. I woke up around 2 am, and got back to sleep, but then woke up again around 3 am, and couldn't get back to sleep then. Grrrrrr. The alarm is going to go off in 3 minutes, I've been up (but not lively or energetic) for hours, and all I want to do is go back to sleep.

I got to skip-40 on my f-list and dwircle, and then went, "Fuck it," because I have barely glanced at LJ/DW for about 7 weeks, and I don't think I can catch up.

I have John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers' For the Beauty of the Earth stuck in my head, and have for 4 days. As ear worms go, it's very pleasant and soothing, but after 4 days, it's starting to pall. The YouTube video I linked to seems to have been posted by someone who is...intensely Christian. Just ignore the comments below the video and focus on the beautiful music, if that's not your scene.

Where the FUCK am I going to find a diabetic-friendly Easter bunny (or egg) for my godson? The only website I found is based out of Ohio, and charges about the bunny's weight in gold for cross-border shipping. Does Ohio have a lot of diabetics or something? Why Ohio? Inquiring minds want to know.

Justice Robin Camp has resigned from the judiciary, oh happy day, halloo hallay. The judicial council had already ruled that he had to be removed, so it was a last-ditch resignation, probably to save his pension, as opposed to him "doing the decent thing." I am agreeably surprised. I was pretty sure the old boys club would hang together and find a way not to remove him, despite his horrible misconduct and apparent gross lack of knowledge of the actual laws on sexual assault in his own jurisdiction leading to a rapist being acquitted. The judicial council of Canada virtually NEVER recommends that judges be fired, to my knowledge.

Of course, it's like a game of Whack a Mole. Robin Camp is forced to resign in Alberta, but oh look, in Nova Scotia, another judge similar to EX-Justice Camp has popped up. According to Justice Gregory Lenehan, if there's any possibility that a woman who's passed out from drinking MIGHT just possibly have consented to sex prior to losing consciousness, the guy assaulting her can't possibly be convicted. I'm paraphrasing, and possibly hyperbolizing (is that even a word?) but just read the fucking newspaper article, and you'll see that I'm not paraphrasing nearly as much as I wish I were.

I'm sorry, I'm not being very coherent, between the blind rage and the lack of sleep. And now the alarm HAS gone off, so I guess I should get dressed and go to the bloody office. It's fucking fiscal year end (forgive my language, but I love alliteration) on March 31, and March 31 is coming up FAST. I have a hot stone massage booked for April 8. I'll need it by then.

Calling UK-based chocoholics!

So, say you wanted to send someone in the UK a very special gift. VERY special, and you know they like good chocolate when they can get it. Would you go with Leonidas or Hotel Chocolat?

Amazon UK has a 500 gram box of Leonidas chocolates for 23.95 plus free delivery. It contains 30 chocolates. Alternately, Hotel Chocolat has a 350 gram box containing 27 chocolates for 22.50 plus 3.95 delivery, so 26.45 for the box. Given that the Hotel Chocolat "sleekster" box only has 3 fewer chocolates in it than the Leonidas "ballotin" box, I'm guessing that there's a lot more packaging weighing down the Leonidas box. Yes, I agree that sleekster and ballotin are pretentious words to describe boxes, but I live with it.

Yes, all the above is in pounds, not Canadian dollars. Yes, it's very fucking expensive, but it's also a very special occasion. Would you go with Leonidas or Hotel Chocolat?

I have had a frelling horrendous week. Just one thing after another. And then last night I was going through my f-list/dwircle for the first time in WEEKS, and stumbled across this video post by [personal profile] selenak, which made me all sniffly. It's about the anti-Nazi WhIte Rose non-violent protest movement in Nazi Germany, which ended up with 3 idealistic university students being executed for the high-crime of distributing anti-regime pamphlets. I'm not kiddingor exaggerating. It's not actually a depressing video, just a sad one, if you get the distinction.

Anyway, I am utterly determined that today I will answer the comments people left me weeks ago, because it's Saturday and I have nothing else to do. Well, I have to take a bath, clean the litter box, get groceries (I have very little food in the house) and take the garbage out, but I don't have to go back to work until Monday, so yay me!

Discretion is the better part of feline valour

Okay, new rule. I am not allowed to spend any more money except on strict essentials until March 10th, 4 weeks from now. I'd say until March 31, but let's set an attainable goal. I have a substance abuse problem: I'm addicted to books! (that's not strictly original. I heard it in some movie or TV show, I forget which, except it was "addicted to shoes," and I modified it to suit my own personal addiction).

I had been doing so WELL, too. Granted, Christmas was expensive, but Christmas is expensive every year.

But I bought a book on Kindle. And then I bought another 5 books on Kindle, all about the English Civil War. It's going to take me forever to get through them all. But they all looked so interesting! I need to go back to getting books out of the library. I was good and willpower-y like that for a while.

Last week, YMW woke me up at about 2 am yowling like a crazy cat and scrabbling at the bedroom window. I looked (rather blearily) outside and saw what appeared at first to be an exceptionally large, fluffy cat. Then I looked again and realized it was a raccoon. Bearing in mind this is an urban neighbourhood, and our urban wildlife aren't particularly fussed about humans. My neighbours above put out crusts for the birds on their balcony ledge, and sometimes the crusts fall onto my patio, which I presume was the attraction.

I hoped a light and human movement in the bedroom window would scare the wretched thing off. Yeah, I know they LOOK cute, but they're still pests. It did not scare the varmint away, and it seemed highly unlikely that YMW would allow me to go back to sleep with her still caterwauling and trying to get out and attack a wild animal twice her size because it was on HER patio. Though I don't know why she's so frelling possessive of it. She's an indoor cat and has never actually set foot on the patio. So I went into the living room, which also overlooks the patio, in hopes light and human movement in another room would scare it off. Didn't work. Also, YMW followed me, continuing to kick up a fuss and scratch at the glass valiantly.

Finally I went into the kitchen, picked up a roll of paper towel and went back to the sliding glass door. The plan was to open the door just a crack so YMW wouldn't get out, then chuck the roll in the raccoon's general direction and hope it ran off. If it worked, great, if it didn't work, I'd have to think of something else. I started to unbolt the door, at which point YMW looked at me, looked back at the raccoon she'd been trying so hard to confront, then turned tail and FLED!!!

The little brat left me on my own to fight the scary monster. Fortunately, the sound of the door unbolting finally spooked the raccoon (or maybe it had finished its snack) and I didn't have to sacrifice any paper towels. I went looking for the turncoat coward, and found her hiding in the cupboard nearest the front door. In other words, as far away as she could get from the raccoon without physically breaking down the door and ending up in the lobby. She is definitely not guard cat material.

I still owe people comments and I promise to get to them this weekend.
