Excellent point, similar to what another commenter said, about how her parents' generation took comfort from Chaplin's attitude during WWII, in the wake of the Blitz. The song is actually from 1936, according to Google, so pre-war, but the general attitude of the thirties, in the wake of the Great Depression would not be that different from the general attitude during WWII.

I wasn't born until 1976, and come from a generation that's into psychotherapy and processing the trauma, rather than putting a brave face on it and toughing it out. ENTIRELY different attitude!

I actually don't know very much about Chaplin's life. I was vaguely aware that he had grown up in poverty in England, but very little beyond that. Can you recommend any good biography, by any chance?
