koalathebear has a whole bunch of fascinating links about
Hugh Thompson, Jr., a helicopter pilot and hero of My Lai. Thompson and his small helicopter crew rescued a bunch of unarmed Vietnamese civilians who were being massacred by US troops. Thompson also testified about My Lai despite enormous pressure not to, was persecuted and threatened even in his own home town after he left the army (because by TALKING about My Lai instead of covering it up he made America look bad, or something), and carved out a post-Army career as a veterans' counsellor. He and his crew got medals for their actions, but they got them 30 years later. I didn't know anything about him. I knew very vaguely about My Lai but I'd never heard of Thompson. Go, read.
