Apparently News Corp is going to sell off its British newspapers, the Sun, the Times, and the Sunday Times. The Sun is profitable, apparently, so will likely find a buyer easily (unless they’re scared off by the fact that apparently some of the Sun’s journalists have been arrested). It’s also a garbage paper, so I wouldn’t weep if it went under, which I doubt it will.

As for the Times and Sunday Times, they are News Corp’s “respectable” papers, and apparently are both running at a loss, and have been for some years. If the Murdochs are no longer willing to subsidize them, I suspect their longterm outlook is bleak. About that I’m rather sad. Yes, the Times is nakedly partisan, and in a direction I don’t agree with, but all the British papers are nakedly partisan. I rather prefer that model to the Canadian and US papers which pretend to be objective.

My extended family back in England always got the Times and the Telegraph, generally so they could do two crosswords in a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Over the years I have received many a clipping from the Times in the mail. So the thought of them going under makes me sad, even though I don’t do crossword puzzles.
