World Cup-related shenanigans

Oh God, why can't I SLEEP? Bitch, bitch, whine, whine.

My mum came into the city yesterday, we went to lunch at a Salvadorean restaurant (yum!) with World Cup flags a'flying everywhere, and had quite a funny conversation about Luis Suarez. Cutting to spare people who don't give a frell about futbol:

ME: So Luis Suarez is probably moving from Liverpool to Barcelona.

MUM: Oh. Is that a step up or down?

ME: A step up, I guess. Plus, his wife's family lives in Barcelona.

MUM: I thought he was from Uruguay, not Spain.

ME: Very good. He is, and so's his wife. But she and her family moved to Barcelona when she was 16.

MUM: But they stayed together?

ME: He got a professional contract with a European club eventually, and followed her to Europe.

MUM: Oh, maybe he's quite a nice guy after all?

ME: Mum, he bit someone! Three different someones! How is that "nice guy" behaviour?

MUM: Well, maybe the reason they stayed together is because she's the only one who'll put up with him. Hey, maybe that's why her family moved to Barcelona when she was a teenager, to get her away from the biting boyfriend!

ME: Could be.

Speaking of Suarez, very interesting, though rather long article on the ESPN website about him and his bitey ways, written *before* the most recent biting incident, and therefore rather prescient.

The only thing I take issue with in the article is the uncritical presentation of the romance between him and wife Sofia Balbi. Which, as presented, is adorable. But let's be realistic for a second. If he's that out of control on the field, chances are his self-control off the field isn't that much better. I'm not saying he's necessarily abusive, but his wife is probably used to walking on eggshells to avoid upsetting him.

I guess I'm wearing orange to work on Wednesday, as Holland will be playing Argentina in the semi-final. I'm not just a bandwagon-jumper, I was actually born there, and have tons of relatives there still.
