Stuff Wot I Bought Recently (and Other Stuff Wot I Want to Buy)

I have bought Young Miss Weaver a new cat tree. This is what passes for excitement in my life.

I am avoiding news reports of the Oscar Pistorius murder trial as much as possible because they are stressing me out. I am convinced he is going to get away with it.

[personal profile] musesfool has convinced me to buy a The Gaslight Anthem album. She's very persuasive! So far I like the songs.

So if I wanted to buy a car seat for a good friend who's having a baby (and doesn't have a lot of money), what the hell is a good brand and model? I looked on the internet, but there was a bewildering array of brands and models at a bewildering array of prices. I've also emailed a real life friend who has 3 kids (she must be a competent mother, since none of the kids are dead yet) but she hasn't gotten back to me. I could make a trek out to Babies 'R' Us and throw myself on the salesperson's mercy, but I have a feeling I might end up with the most expensive seat, not necessarily the best one. Come on, oh mighty f-list/dwircle. I know some of you have small children.

Also, wow, even the cheapest car seats are frelling expensive! No wonder everybody I know who has kids is perpetually broke.

Edited to add: Never mind, no recommendations needed. She'd like a gift card and to pick it out herself, which is actually a whole lot less work for me, so yay!

Good thinking! Because I was going to make some recs for you (I am a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician), but it was going to require you doing some research like the make & model of her car, whether she plans on using the seat in taxis & public transportation, etc.

Basically any car seat on the market these days is safe, since they all have to pass the same crash tests, but they vary a lot in how easy it is to adjust certain features, how well they fit in different types of cars, how comfortably they fit kids of different shapes, etc. So preferences are very individual.
